Preparation and Electrochemical characterization of Gel Polymer Electrolyte For Lithium Ion Polymer Batteries

Ionically conducting polymers, called “polymer electrolytes” have opened a new capacity of materials research with possible applications in the power sources industry. The main uses of the polymer electrolytes are in rechargeable lithium batteries. The advantages of these batteries such as no leakage of electrolyte, improved safety hazards, higher energy density led to the development of lithium polymer batteries and other electrochemical devices. Polymer electrolyte membrane in batteries to being a separator should have specific characteristics such as high ionic conductivity, good dimensional stability, high cationic transference number, good mechanical stability and etc.
In this work, variety of gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) were prepared by using of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a host polymer, lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) as a lithium salt , dimethyl acetamide (DMAc). GPEs with different composition were prepared using solution casting procedure and their physical, chemical and electrochemical properties were investigated using different techniques such as X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Impedance spectroscopy (EIS). According to the obtained XRD patterns, it was found that the addition of DMAc as solvent causes a significant decrease in the crystalinity of PMMA polymer. In SEM images of GPE samples, a porous and heterogeneous surface structure was observed for GPEs.Electrochemical potential window was increased up to 4.5 (V) by increasing amount of PMMA for GPE-5.
