The effect of cyanuric chloride particles on the gas separation performance of polysulfone membrane

In this study the gas separation performance of polysulfone mixed matrix membranes incorporated with cyanuric chloride (CC) particles has been investigated. The composite membranes were prepared by solution-casting method. The effects of Cyanuric chloride (<2%) on the membrane characteristic were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The gas transport properties were studied using pure gas permeation tests of N2‌, O2, CO2 and CH4 for each membrane at 30°C and 10 bar. The results obtained from characterization tests indicate the reasonable distribution of particles and also creation of an open pass through membrane by addition of CC particles. The permeation test results showed that permeation of all gases enhance significantly by cyanuric chloride. Gas permeation tests indicated that the permeability enhancement resulted from increases in solubility as well as diffusivity. Membranes With 2 wt% of cyanuric chloride showed up to 41% increase in CO2 permeability when compared to the neat polymer. However, the selectivity of all pair gases decreased due to the addition of cyanuric chloride.
